Burn Injury
Burn injuries are a perennial problem in Indiana and the rest of the U.S. According to the American Burn Association, approximately 4,000 people every year die in fire and burn related accidents. Approximately 3,500 of these deaths occur as a result of fires in homes or apartment complexes. Another 500 people die from burns connected with car and plane crashes and chemical burns. Three out of four victims die at the scene.
Hospitalization for burns
Burns have the potential for inflicting catastrophic injuries. According to the 2003 National Hospital Discharge Survey, approximately 40,000 Americans every year check into hospitals for burn injuries. Around 60% of these admissions end up at dedicated burn units.
When you expand this survey to include outpatient clinics, urgent care centers and private office visits, the number of burn injuries reported jumps up to half a million per year, according to a National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey from 2004.
Common causes of burn injuries
- Exposure to fire or flame (nearly 50% of reported injuries)
- Scalding injuries (e.g. getting splashed with boiling water). These account for 33% of reported injuries.
- Contact with hot objects, such as stoves, metal plates, burners, and industrial equipment. These account for approximately 8% of injuries.
- Electrical and chemical burns account for approximately 7% of reported cases.
