Distracted Driving FAQ's

Q: How many accidents are caused by distracted driving?

A: It's impossible to say or know for sure because police agencies don't always report distractions or even know about them as being the cause. Some of the most horrific crashes are clearly linked to distracted driving; but some never live through the crash to explain. Further, even if a distracted driver survives a crash, they rarely will admit to being distracted in any event even if in fact they were. A federal study found that distractions contributed to 22 percent of all crashes and near-crashes, which is certainly a very conservative estimate given that most distracted drivers will not admit to being distracted in the first place. Police data shows that 16 percent of fatal crashes and 21 percent of injury crashes involved distractions. It also shows that the proportion of fatal crashes caused by distracted driving grew from 8 percent in 2004 to 11 percent in 2008 and continues to increase to present day even with its negative publicity and high-profile cases involving significant injury.
