Distracted Driving FAQ's
Q: Are there special distracted driving rules for commercial drivers?
A: Yes. The federal government has recently made a rule banning texting behind the wheel for people with commercial drivers' licenses (known as a CDL). CDL license holders usually drive trucks or larger vehicles for hauling and delivery. It also applies to interstate commercial truckers of big rigs and bus drivers. Some states have also banned school bus drivers from texting or talking on their cell-phones. Many businesses have smartly made their own policies against phone use behind the wheel since employees driving within the course and scope of their employment subject their employers to legal exposure for injuries caused in a crash due to distracted driving. And all commercial drivers are held to stricter safety rules than private drivers as it should be. Imagine the significance of the aftermath of a big rig 18-wheeler on an interstate highway traveling at 70 mph or more who gets distracted for just "one-second" in time. Unfortunately, crashes involving big rigs being driven by a distracted driver are more times than not both horrific and significant and continue to occur daily throughout the country. They are almost in every case catastrophic in nature, life-changing or fatal to its victims and tragic for surviving family members. Almost all big rig crashes would have been prevented had the driver not allowed him or herself to become a victim of distracted driving.
