Distracted Driving FAQ's
Q: Which drivers are most likely to drive while distracted?
A: Almost everyone who drives has probably been guilty of some form of distracted driving at some point. But according to government statistics, drivers under the age of 20 had the highest proportion of fatal car accidents caused by distraction, at 16 percent. Drivers ages 20 to 29 were the next most likely, at twelve percent. It is apparent that the youngest and least experienced drivers suffer the highest proportion of crashes causing injury or death either to themselves, their passengers or to someone else (whether in a car, truck, on a motorcycle or bicycle and even to pedestrians). As such, many states, including Indiana, have enacted laws prohibiting texting and cell-phone use while driving for new drivers in order to protect them and others from themselves. The government also found that the drivers most likely to be distracted during fatal crashes were drivers of SUVs, pickups and motorcycles. Drivers of SUVs, trucks and pickups, simply have a false sense of security due to the size of their vehicles. Unfortunately and amazingly, many motorcyclists and bicyclists are guilty of giving in to distraction temptations but do so recklessly and at their own peril. It's one thing to fall victim to distractions while on 4 or more wheels but while on 2 wheels is uncalled for.
