A single vehicle crash in Jennings County occurred on Thursday, December 9 and left a motorist with serious leg injuries. The car accident may have been caused by driver fatigue, reports The Republic. The Indiana car crash occurred on U.S. 50 just east of Road 1000W at about 12:45 a.m. when the vehicle, which was driven by a 19-year old driver, left the road and struck a line of trees, leaving him trapped in the car. The driver had to be cut out of his vehicle and was flown to a local area hospital for treatment of his injuries. When questioned by police, the teen stated that he was tired and believes he may have fallen asleep at the wheel. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), an estimated 56,000 crashes occur annually in which driver fatigue is cited as the cause. Roughly 40,000 injuries and 1,500 fatalities occur as a result of these accidents. It is the responsibility of all motorists to ensure that they are not distracted or fatigued while operating a motor vehicle in Indiana as well as nationwide. Drivers who feel that they are getting sleepy should pull over and rest before getting back on the road. If a motorist finds themselves fatigued before getting in the car, they should not drive. Taking proper precautions and ensuring that the correct amount of sleep is obtained is imperative to preventing an Indiana auto accident that could potentially result in serious injuries or fatalities. If you or a loved one has been injured in a car crash and you suspect that distracted driving or driver fatigue was a factor in the accident, you may be entitled to compensation.
