Traumatic Brain Injury FAQ's
Q: How are brain injuries treated?
A: Right after an accident, doctors treat brain injuries by attempting to bring down any swelling and administering medications if necessary; if needed, they also can perform surgery to remove lesions or objects; and ensuring that the brain gets enough blood and oxygen. These treatments focus on preventing further injury, because doctors cannot yet reverse the damage to the brain. Once the patient is stable, he or she can begin rehabilitation and therapy aimed at learning to accommodate any new disability. And some even have to learn how to become reacquainted with friends and loved ones – which can be very challenging to say the least.
