Indiana’s Most Recommended Motorcycle Routes
Ohio River Scenic Byway
This motorcycle route runs along the Ohio River through southern Indiana, with gorgeous views of the river and countryside. Riders can travel beautiful, winding roads in the hills and forests of Brown County. Be sure to check out Salt Creek Road, which follows the creek before heading upward. Autumn is a wonderful time to go, with craft shops, farms, and changing foliage.
State Road 135
State Road 135 runs south of Indianapolis and through Bean Blossom, a small town that hosts a large biker fest every June. Keep heading south on SR 135 and you’ll arrive in the tiny town of Story, Indiana. This is a windy motorcycle route that will lead you to Story Inn, a hotel with an excellent restaurant and plenty of events.
Brown County Loop
This path takes you through Brown County State Park and the Hoosier National Forest. It’s another of several motorcycle roads that are best traveled in the fall, with an abundance of colorful leaves. This route begins in Nashville and runs through several quaint suburbs before turning back to town.
Indiana Dunes National Park
This is one of the more geographically diverse motorcycle routes in the state, starting with the southern shore of Lake Michigan and running through Indiana Dunes National Park. You can catch stunning glimpses of the lake and dunes, but the beauty doesn’t end there: trails taking you through woodlands, prairies, and lush wetlands also await.
Crawford-Perry County River Loop
The Crawford-Perry County River Loop runs 120 miles and is great for sightseeing. Both winding and straight roads will greet you, and there’s something on this trip for riders of all abilities. Included in this scenic motorcycle ride is the Ohio River, the Hoosier National Forest, and the Cannelton Locks and Dam. Ideal for either a spring or fall trip, this motorcycle road won’t disappoint.
State Road 46 to US 37
SR 46 will lead you through Brown County and its state park, and carry you to Bloomington. This city is home to Indiana University which has a vibrant downtown area. From Bloomington you can then take US 37 north and hit several different country roads as you make your way back home.
Michigan Road
Built in the 1830s, historic Michigan Road is one of Indiana’s first highways. It was constructed to connect the Ohio River to Indianapolis to Lake Michigan, and a motorcyclist can still travel the entire route today. Expect to visit small towns and countryside while you explore local history and culture along the way.
Covered Bridge Loop
Are you a history buff? The Covered Bridge Loop trail is just for you. This trip will take you through a number of historic covered bridges in Parke County. The loop trail spans six Indiana counties and includes nine old bridges with views you won’t forget.
White River and Williams Dam
Take State Road 450 west out of Bedford and you’ll eventually catch an amazing view of the White River. You’ll ride through farms and hill country, and the road will lead you to Williams Dam in Lawrence. Originally built to generate hydroelectricity, this is now a recreational area and one of the most popular motorcycle rides in Indiana.
Back Road Lake Cruise
Motorcyclists can enjoy leisurely country roads on this path. Starting in Waterloo, where US 6 and 427 meet, take 427 north and ride through Hamilton. You can find plenty of places to eat and refuel along the way. If you want more farm country and remote wooded areas, you can wander a ways on 427 into Ohio before heading back.
What To Pack For Your Motorcycle Trip
When deciding what to pack for your motorcycle adventure, consider the season and weather forecast and make sure you have the following:
- Motorcycle gear (helmet, gloves, riding socks, etc.)
- Personal clothing
- Electronics, including your cell phone, GPS, and battery pack
- Camping equipment if you’re planning any overnights
- Personal hygiene items
- Paperwork (e.g. license and insurance information)
- Tools for any necessary repairs, maintenance, or emergencies
- Food and water
